Ryan Howard is in pain and has been from some time. His slide into home plate last Tuesday and seemed to have re-aggravated his ailing left knee. The Phillies $125-million first baseman was scratched from Saturday's scheduled start and subsequently place on the disabled list.
Today will be a telling day for the rest of the 33 year old's season. He is slated to undergo an MRI which should be able to shed some light on the injury and indicate to doctors whether surgery will be required or not.
In 80 games this season, Howard is hitting .266/.319/.465 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI.
He wasn't healthy last year. We though was healthy for part of this year but then he revealed that he was playing in pain for much of the season. Howard to the disabled list is probably best. With Howard out, the Phillies' brass can see what Darin Ruf can do after spending the end of last season with the big club.
