CSN Philly's Jim Salisbury lays out an intricate web of facts, tidbits, and inside information that all points in the direction that the Phillies are nearing a contract extension with Utley. There is nothing definitive behind the report but Salisbury cites a source with knowledge of the situation saying there have been talks between the organization and Utley's representatives.
Utley, 34, is hitting .286/.346/.520 with 13 home runs, 36 RBI, and seven steals this season. He has spent his entire big league career with the Phillies and is approaching his 10 year anniversary on August 22nd.
The report makes sense and, as a fan, I'm excited about the possibility. However, last night's slaughter in St. Louis looks like this team is going to be sellers at the deadline but it appears, as of now, Utley is safe. Whether that is the right call or not for a team with an aging core is still up for debate.
