CSN Philly's Jim Salisbury reports the Phillies and outfielder Bobby Abreu have pushed back Abreu's opt out date from tomorrow to Sunday to give the team more time to evaluate him. Abreu has been limited recently with shoulder soreness.
The 40-year-old is 9-for-35 batting .257/.422/.400 this spring with one RBI, five runs and nine walks this spring with the Phillies. His main competition for one of the Phillies backup outfielder spots is Tony Gwynn Jr. who has played great baseball this spring going 12-for-37 batting .324/.447/.514 with one home run, four RBIs, seven runs and seven walks.
Based on this spring, I think Gwynn provides more for the Phillies than Abreu both at the plate and in the field.
