Forbes released its valuations of the top 50 sports franchises in the world. Spanish soccer club Real Madrid came in at No. 1 on the list valued at $3.44 billion. The Philadelphia Phillies came it at No. 39 on the list valued at $975 million. They are the highest ranked franchise that isn't over $1 billion.
The Phillies were the only National League East team to crack the top 50. The only baseball teams ahead of Philadelphia on the list were the Yankees (No. 4 - $2.5 billion), Dodgers (No. 6 - $2 billion), Red Sox (No. 11 - $1.5 billion), Cubs (No. 21 - $1.2 billion) and Giants (No. 37 - $1 billion).
The Phillies $5 billion television deal likely added a lot to the team's worth. The ownership group, led by team president David Montgomery, certainly must be happy with this new valuation of the club.
