The Phillies announced they have cut Michael Stutes along with Luis Garcia, Jesse Biddle, Kelly Dugan. Aaron Altherr, Leandro Castro and Sebastian Valle. They were all re-assigned to minor-league camp as the Phillies reduced their roster for the first time this spring.
Stutes, 27, was not sharp in Clearwater allowing seven earned runs on five hits and three walks in three innings this spring as his fastball topped out at 88 mph. Stutes broke out as a rookie with the Phillies in 2011 going 6-2 with a 3.63 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP in 57 games. He has struggled with shoulder issues over the last two seasons posting a 3-1 record with a 5.02 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP in 23.1 innings in 2012-13 combined.
He looks like a totally different pitcher from when he first came up and that's not a good thing.
