The team announced that they have called up left-handed reliever Cesar Jimenez to replace the suspended Antonio Bastardo. In addition to Jimenez, the Phillies also activated outfielder Domonic Brown from the disabled list. To make room for Brown, the team designated Laynce Nix for assignment.
Jimenez, 28, has not pitched in the majors since 2011 when he was with the Seattle Mariners. He signed with the Phillies in December 2012 and has spent the entire 2013 season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. In 36 games this season Jimenez was 4-2 with a 3.12 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP in 66.1 innings of work. He will wear No. 56.
Nix, 32, has been on and off the disabled list since he signed with the Phillies prior to the 2012 season. In 81 games (128 at-bats), Nix was batting .180/.228/.258 with two home runs and seven RBIs.
Brown, 25, returned to action Monday night in Lakewood as he got the start in left field for the Single-A Blue Claws. Brown was strong in his start going 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs, two runs scored, and no strikeouts. He has been a crucial piece in the Phillies lineup this season. The All-Star leftfielder is batting .271/.316/.531 with a team leading 24 home runs and a team high 69 RBIs in 99 games this season.
Jimenez is the 46th different player to suit up for the Phillies this year and he is the 21st Lehigh Valley player called up, the most ever. The Phillies had 49 players suit up for them last year and we all saw how that turned out.
