The team announced today that they have designated 23-year-old Sebastian Valle for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for new starter Roberto Hernandez.
Valle looked to be the Phillies replacement for Carlos Ruiz up until 2012. He represented the Phillies at the 2011 MLB Futures Game along with Jared Cosart, who is also not with the Phillies organization. In 2012, Valle hit 17 home runs with 58 RBIs while batting .253/.271/.428 between Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Valle began to struggle midway through 2012 and even more so after the Phillies acquired Tommy Joseph in exchange for outfielder Hunter Pence. Due to the logjam at catcher in the upper-levels of the Phillies farm system between Valle, Joseph, and Cameron Rupp, Valle was sent down to Double-A Reading for 2013 and struggled. He batted .203/.245/.359 with 12 home runs and 41 RBIs.
Last season in Tampa, Hernandez was 6-13 with a 4.89 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP in 32 games (24 starts).
Another top prospect to fizzle.
