With their loss, the Phillies locked-up the seventh overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft which is protected (all top-10 picks are protected) if the Phillies want to go after a Type-A free agent.
The seventh overall pick has been a source of production in the last 12 or so years. Prince Fielder (2002), Nick Markakis (2003), Troy Tulowitzki (2005), Clayton Kershaw (2006), Yonder Alonso (2008), Mike Minor (2009), and Matt Harvey (2010) were all selected with the seventh overall pick. The last time the Phillies had the seventh overall pick was in 1986 when they selected pitcher Brad Brink from USC.
