Phillies president David Montgomery was on the WIP Morning Show on Monday talking everything Phillies. The topic of the NCAA investigation came up and Montgomery didn't hide behind a "no comment" shield. Montgomery cited scout "frustration" when it came to Wetzler, along with sixth-round pick Jason Monda, not signing. He was straight-forward saying "a different approach probably would've been better."
The Phillies released a statement last Sunday regarding the situation stating they did participate in the investigation but would not comment any further on the issue.
Wetzler is a three-year starting pitcher for the Beavers who was suspended for Oregon State's first 11 games of the season due to inappropriate contact with an agent. He is a three-pitch pitcher with a fastball that sits in the low-90s with movement, changeup, and a slider. He has a decent frame at 6’1”, 210 lbs. Wetzler has a strong changeup with room for improvement and holds his own on the mound. He tends to be aggressive and go after hitters. Wetzler is known as a control-pitcher.
