The Philadelphia Inquirer's Matt Gelb reports Phillies team president David Montgomery will be taking a medical leave of absence from the team while he recovers following surgery to remove cancer from his jaw. The surgery was performed in May but Montgomery has been around the team despite undergoing chemotherapy.
Former general manager Pat Gillick, who is currently a senior advisor for the Phillies front office, will step in to run the day-to-day operations of the team. Gillick released a statement saying, "I have the highest regard for David Montgomery, as does everyone in our industry. I am glad to be of assistance to the Phillies."
Montgomery will return to the team following his recovery.
