CBS Sports is reporting that the Phillies asking price for Cliff Lee is "enormous" and that Ruben Amaro Jr. is asking for three or four of a team's best prospects plus absorbing the full remainder of Lee's $50 million guaranteed contract the next two seasons and the possible $27.5 million vesting option for 2016.
Lee, 34, is 10-4 with a 3.05 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP with 131 strikeouts in 144.2 innings of work. Opponents are hitting just .230 off of him this year. A concern has arisen about his health as he missed his start on Saturday due to a stiff neck.
Think about this - the Phillies don't have to trade Cliff Lee. He will be here for another two years if the Phillies don't move him. They can "re-tool" around him if they so desire. If they do move him for that price - fantastic. They bolster their depleted farm system. It's a great approach assuming they don't compromise it at any point.
