Nonetheless it is official and it is starting to sink in. The team announced that Sandberg has signed a three-year contract to be the Phillies skipper, the 52nd in the franchise's history.
Sandberg, 54, replaced longtime Phillies manager Charlie Manuel on August 16th and the team has subsequently gone 18-17 in the 35 games following which is impressive given that they had the fourth-worst record in the National League at the time of Manuel's dismissal. There appears to be a different attitude in the clubhouse which is a positive sign. Sandberg left the Cubs organization following the 2010 season to manage the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. He became the Phillies bench coach this season before being named interim manager.
