The Phillies have selected first baseman Rhys Hoskins from Sacramento State University with the 142nd overall pick in the MLB Draft.
Hoskins is a slugger in every sense of the word as he really has shown the ability to hit the ball. The first baseman has plus power and is a true pull hitter. The 6'4", 225 lbs. slugger sometimes features a bit of a long swing and can look to pull the ball more often than he should.
While Hoskins played a corner outfielder spot his freshman year at Sacramento State and also in the Cape Cod league last summer but he cannot run so he likely projects as a first baseman. His defense is average but his bat is his calling card.
In 56 games last season for the Hornets, Hoskins batted .330/.437/.596 with 12 home runs and 53 RBIs with 37 walks and just 29 strikeouts. He also placed near the top of the Cape Cod League in last summer with seven home runs while batting .336.
The bonus allotment for the 142nd overall pick is $349,700.
