The Phillies selected outfielder Matt Shortall from University of Texas at Arlington with the 292nd overall pick in the MLB draft.
Shortall transferred to UT-Arlington after spending a year as a catcher at Tulane. The 23-year-old outfielder swings a good bat. He batted .344/.398/.586 with 10 home runs and 57 RBIs in 58 games in 2014. That wasn't just a flash in the pan either as Shortall batted .362/.409/.560 with eight home runs and 54 RBIs in 55 games in 2013.
The 6'3", 215 lbs. outfielder has the size to handle the slate of games at the professional level. He is more mature than some of his 2014 draft classmates as he turns 24 years old on October 12th. Shortall follows the Phillies' line of thinking in this draft as he is another big college player.
The bonus allotment for the 292nd overall pick is $140,000.
