The Phillies have selected shortstop Emmanuel Marrero from Alabama State University with the 202nd overall pick in the MLB Draft.
Marrero is the first Alabama State player drafted since 2002 and the highest draft pick in school history. The 21-year-old is widely considered to be the best defensive player in the entire draft. He has quick hands and feet with above-average range. Marrero is a smooth defensive players with a strong and accurate arm. He had shown the ability to make the easy and difficult plays on a routine basis.
While the 6'0", 180 lbs. shortstop is a defensive whiz, he lacks strength at the plate. Marrero is a switch hitter who is better from the right side of the plate. He showed the ability to put balls in play but he has little power. In 49 games for the Hornets this season, Marrero batted .332/.394/.526 with three home runs and 52 RBIs. Of his 63 hits on the year, 23 of them went for extra-bases.
The bonus allotment for the 202nd overall pick is $196,200.
