After resigning Chase Utley and blasting the Cubs 12-1 yesterday, the Phillies acquired some outside talent as well. According to Baseball America, the Phillies have signed 16 year old Dominican 3B prospect Luis Encarnacion for a $1 million signing bonus.
The 6'2" 195 lbs. infielder was eligible to sign with any team when he turned 16 at midnight. He hits right-handed and his strength is at the plate. Encarnacion has shown the ability to hit for plus-power in game play, which is a big plus as players struggle to translate batting practice power over to game power. According to reports, he is not exactly a defensive player so his future will likely be in one of the corner outfield spots or first base.
I like that the Phillies are finally starting to recognize that there is legitimate talent internationally and making a bid for the top-tier players.
