Just last Thursday reports began to surface that the Phillies and Chase Utley could be closing in on a contract extension. As exciting as the possibility of keeping Chase Utley around is, the question remains: is this the right move for the franchise?
Ruben Amaro Jr. must be convinced it is the right call. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Phillies are telling inquiring teams that Utley is not available for trade and that the two sides are working on a contract extension.
Utley, 34, is batting .274/.337/.498 with 13 home runs and 36 RBIs in 76 games this season. He has only played in 186 total games combined the last two seasons and already matched his hit total from last season (77) in 20 less at-bats this year. Utley has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise bleak season for the Phillies.
