New to Major League Baseball this season is the rule that a catcher may not block the plate until he has the ball. In the bottom of the sixth inning of Sunday's 4-2 victory over the Diamondbacks, Marlon Byrd was up with two outs and Ryan Howard on first. Byrd flied to shallow right-center where second baseman Didi Gregorious dropped the ball and it kicked to centerfielder Ender Inciarte.
Inciarte fired the ball to catcher Miguel Montero, who was blocking the plate waiting for Howard who rounded second base. Howard was ruled out at the plate but the play went to replay to see if Montero gave Howard any part of the plate to slide.
This rule has a lot of fans angered, particularly those in Arizona on Sunday.
