The Phillies announced Sunday night they have traded outfielder John Mayberry Jr. to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for minor league third baseman Gustavo Pierre.
Mayberry, 30, spent six seasons with the Phillies appearing in exactly 500 games and batting .242/.304/.429 with 52 home runs and 169 RBIs in 1,252 at-bats. The outfielder/first baseman was batting .213/.304/.418 with six home runs and 21 RBIs in 122 at-bats this season.
Pierre, 22, makes his money on defense as he can play second base, shortstop and third base while featuring a strong arm and he moves well. Unfortunately, he is not strong at the plate. Between high-A and Double-A this season, he is batting .260/.281/.388 with eight home runs and 43 RBIs. He has walked just 13 times in 437 plate appearances this season.
