Atlanta Braves beat writer Mark Bowman reports the Phillies have Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell high on their list of candidates. The Phillies were prohibited to contact McDowell until his contract expired at midnight Thursday, now he is fair game.
McDowell is reportedly "one of the game’s lowest-paid pitching coaches" and the Phillies could be willing to pay to get him to Philadelphia. McDowell has led the Braves pitching staff since 2006 after Leo Mazzone went to take the Orioles pitching coach job, since that time they have been one of the best staffs in baseball.
McDowell, 52, played for the Phillies from 1989-91 and included a nice little scuffle with former Phillie Gregg Jeffries. While McDowell can certainly teach pitchers, he can be a little, to put it nicely, "rough around the edges." Remember the story from 2011 between a fan and McDowell?
But he certainly manage a pitching staff.
