Today, Tortorella back tracked on his statement following the game and apologized. Per Katie Strang of ESPN New York, Tortorella said, "I tainted the Winter Classic with my mouth and I shouldn't have. So I apologize to everyone involved. They were sarcastic comments by me, at the wrong time. It was frustration on my part as far as the referees were concerned and how it was done at the end of the game… It was wrong with my sarcasm and frustration, and I apologize to everyone involved. I want to make sure that's straight. That was not my intent and I certainly handled it the wrong way.”
Tortorella might be trying to save face (or his wallet) but it might be too little too late. Tortorella removed his from his mouth but still might have to ante up when the league office comes calling. With the HBO cameras gone, tomorrow will be the last time Flyers fans see “Torts” until Sunday, February 5th at Madison Square Garden with the final installment of HBO’s 24/7 airing at 10 pm.
