The Texas Rangers announced Monday staff ace Yu Darvish will not make his Opening Day start due to a stiff neck but the team fears there might be addition issues. Darvish has been sent back to Texas for further evaluation. The Rangers have not announced Darvish's replacement but Martin Perez is up for the start.
The Phillies are certainly dodging a bullet by not facing Darvish next Monday in Texas.
Darvish, 27, has become one of the league's best pitchers since coming over from Japan in 2012. The right-hander went 13-9 with a 2.83 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP in 209.2 innings in 32 starts last season for Texas. Darvish led all of Major League Baseball with 277 strikeouts, 37 more than the next closest pitcher, en route to finishing second in the AL Cy Young voting.
