Fox Sports' Jon Morosi reported this week Cole Hamels can be trade to nine teams without his permission. The nine teams reportedly on Hamels' list are the Dodgers, Angels, Cardinals, Nationals, Braves, Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers and his hometown San Diego Padres.
The left-hander is by far the Phillies most valuable trade chip as the July 31st trade deadline looms. Hamels is expensive as he isowed a guaranteed $90 million after this season with a $20 million for 2019 which could become a $24 million vesting option if he has 400 innings pitched in 2017-18, including 200 innings pitched in 2018, and is not on the disabled list with a shoulder or elbow injury at the end of the 2018 season.
Hamels' contract is expensive but he would also cost a high price as the Phillies would demand top prospects in return for their ace. A deal would really have to blow the Phillies away in order to move their ace and pretty much declare they are rebuilding or, excuse me, "retooling."
Hamels, 30, is having one of the best seasons of his career but isn't getting run support so his record doesn't reflect his effectiveness in 2014. He is 3-5 with a 2.87 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP with 101 strikeouts in 100.1 innings in 15 starts for the Phillies.
