Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio cites sources that say the competition was "not close." This comes as a bit of a surprise given that it took Kelly until August 20th, less than three weeks before the team kicks off the regular season, to name Vick as the starter.
Based on this preseason, the decision to start Vick was an easy one. Vick, 33, is 13-for-15 (86.7%) for 199 yards with a touchdown and an interception so far in the preseason. Foles, 24, is 11-for-14 (78.6%) for 96 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception in opponent's territory.
Last season in 10 games for the Eagles, Vick completed 58.1% of his passes for 2,362 yards with 12 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and lost three fumbles before suffering a concussion that sidelined him. Foles started six games (played in seven) and completed 60.8% of his passes for 1,699 yards, six touchdowns, five interceptions, and one lost fumble.
No one can argue, for football reasons, against starting Michael Vick based on his play so far under Chip Kelly. I think he made the right choice given the information he has available. But, the moment things go south for ol' No. 7, fans will be clamoring for Foles.
