Sportsnet's Josh Rimer is reporting that the Flyers have notified Briere that they will exercise one of their two buyouts on the 35 year old center. Buying out Briere will relieve the Flyers of a $6.5 million cap hit over the next two seasons but the buyout will only cost $5 million as he was slated to make $3 million this year and $2 million next year. Briere signed an eight-year, $52 million deal with the Flyers in July 2007.
Briere was limited with injuries last season scoring six goals and adding 10 assists. Arguably his best season with the orange and black was in 2010-11 when he scored 34 goals and dished out 34 assists for 68 points and a career high +/- mark of plus-20. That season he lead them to a first round playoff victory over his former team, the Buffalo Sabres. He spent more time with the Flyers (six full seasons) than any other team in his professional career and was a fan favorite during his time in Philadelphia.
