Josh Rimer of Sportsnet tweeted earlier that the Flyers have talked to the Canadiens about Subban.
“Hearing Flyers have contacted Montreal about PK Subban. Question is would MTL be willing to move him and for what package coming back?”
Rimer would go on to answer his own question just five minutes later,
“Sean Couturier would likely be the piece going back to Montreal for Subban. Btw 2 other teams have contacted MTL about Subban.”
I should point out that there has not been much more to this report other that the Flyers have contacted the Canadiens. It does not come as a surprise and it would negligent of Paul Holmgren not to call Montreal. Subban, 23, scored seven goals with 29 assists for 36 points last year in his second full season in the NHL. In his rookie year, Subban scored 14 goals with 24 assists for 38 points. He would absolutely upgrade the Flyers blue line.
However, the price does seem steep if the Canadiens are asking for Sean Couturier. The 20 year old center is in his second season with the Flyers and has shown the ability to play with the best in the world as he shut down Evgeni Malkin and his line in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals last spring. He scored 13 goals with 14 assists last year as a 19 year old and has a goal and an assist in four games this year. He is a two-way forward who gets time on the power play and penalty kill. It would be a hefty price for Subban. I cannot see Couturier getting moved.
