This came on the heels of a report from the Detroit Free Press that Cleary was going to make a decision on Monday and had a number of offers on the table. Cleary reportedly had interest from the Ducks and Penguins in addition to the Flyers although he made it clear that he did not want to leave Detroit where he has played since 2005.
Now TSN's Darren Dreger reports that the Flyers are interested in Cleary which would likely be a three-year deal.
Cleary, 34, played in 48 games last season for the Red Wings scoring nine times and dishing out six assists. The 6'0", 208 lbs. winger scored 12 or more goals in each of the six seasons prior to the 2012-13 lockout-shortened season.
I don't fully understand this move to be honest. If he were to join the Flyers, he would probably take on a similar role to that of Mike Knuble last year. I don't see why Cleary would be that big of an upgrade over Simon Gagne who would likely only cost a one-year deal. There are a lot of young guys in the pipeline who need ice time in the next three years.
