Now, he's available! The Lightning's decision to amnesty the 33 year old captain brought the suitors out of the woodwork over the weekend. The Flyers were one of 11 teams to have shown interest in Lecavalier's services.
ESPN's Pierre LeBrun reports that Lecavalier could be choosing his next team by the end of the day on Wednesday. Free agents cannot officially sign until Friday but they can agree to terms as early as 12:01 am Wednesday.
What makes this particularly interesting is that the Flyers are believed to be one of the top five teams to land Lecavalier. He is expected to receive a contract in the $4-5 million range which has some Flyers fans worried about their cap space.
The 6'4", 208 lbs. center scored 10 goals and added 22 assists in 39 games last year for Tampa. His best year came in 2006-07 when he scored 52 goals and added 56 assists. Despite only being 33 years old, he has some wear and tear on his body as he has played in 1,037 career games.
I don't fully understand the move for another center unless they have some sort of plan to move a center already on the roster (perhaps Sean Couturier?) because I am hoping Scott Laughton can be given a shot to make the team out of training camp. The contract is also somewhat scary. Signing Lecavalier would certainly improve the team - but at what cost?
