“If the Phillies land Lopez, he could set up for closer Jonathan Papelbon. The Phillies have been looking for an eighth-inning setup man and pursued free agent Ryan Madson before he came to an agreement with the Angels.”
Lopez, 29, experienced a ton of success last year on a dreadful team. He went 6-3 with 10 saves and nine holds while registering a 2.17 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. He only walked eight batters in 66.1 innings. In his 3+ year career, Lopez only has 39 walks in 223.2 innings.
He is attractive to the Phillies for their obvious need for bullpen help in addition to the fact that he is a sinkerball pitcher (they tend to fare well at Citizens Bank Park) and he is under control for the next three seasons. The Phillies will be sending a “Major League ready” prospect to the Astros according to Heyman.
