With the recent success of the Phillies pulling themselves back into the race, fans are beginning to think that buying at the trade deadline might not be a bad idea. If that is how the fans are thinking, they are on the same page as Ruben Amaro Jr.
ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting that other general managers say Amaro is talking about buying at the deadline, not selling.
At 44-45 and 7.5 games out of the NL East lead, the Phillies are still in the thick of the race. No team has really run away with the National League and, under Charlie Manuel, the Phillies have been a very successful second half team. If this is how Amaro is looking at the team, then you can see why he is thinking about buying.
If there is an area that the Phillies need to focus on bolstering it is the bullpen. Antonio Bastardo registered his second save of the season last night but didn't do it easily as he allowed a run and got the final out with the tying run at the plate. Their bullpen is 13-15 with a 4.65 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP.
Who does Amaro have on his radar? It's unknown but it won't, I should say, "it shouldn't" be a big name because the Phillies do not have a ton of assets to trade.
