The Associated Press reports Phillies' Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt has been dealing with "an advanced form of skin cancer." The 64-year-old has stage 3 melanoma and under went two operations along with chemotherapy and radiation treatment but said he feels "fantastic" now.
It was reported earlier this winter Schmidt would be absent from spring training due to an undisclosed illness marking this spring training as the first one since 2001 that Schmidt has not been an instructor.
The illness is not expected to keep Schmidt out of the broadcast booth. Schmidt will be the third man in the booth for all 13 home Sunday games this season. He will be joined by Tom McCarthy and one of either Jamie Moyer or Matt Stairs, who were hired earlier this winter.
He spent his entire 18-year career with the Phillies belting 548 home runs and driving in 1,595 RBIs en route to being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1995.
