The Flyers reportedly signed RW Daniel Cleary to a three year contract but then it was announced that he had signed a professional tryout contract instead. Now? He might never show up. CBC's Elliotte Friedman reports that Cleary "will not be joining the Flyers" due to contractual issues.
I actually feel better about this than I did when I heard that he signed with the Flyers. I didn't understand the move even though Cleary probably would have taken on a similar role to that of Mike Knuble when he came to the Flyers as a 33 year old in 2005. There are a lot of young guys in the pipeline who need ice time in the next three years so signing him to a three-year deal does not make all that much sense but apparently Cleary wants those years.
Cleary, 34, played in 48 games last season for the Red Wings scoring nine times and dishing out six assists. The 6'0", 208 lbs. winger scored 12 or more goals in each of the six seasons prior to the 2012-13 lockout-shortened season.
