First off, this perfect timing for goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov. I don’t know about you but it seems like ages ago that Bryzgalov was pulled against the Penguins amidst a shower of boos from the Wells Fargo Center. Since then, there have been trades, trade rumors, and fans calling for the removal of Bryzgalov. We have speculated of ways for the Flyers to rid themselves of Bryzgalov’s salary. We also have heard from hockey insiders about the potential of the Flyers with their current goaltenders. It also did not help that Bryzgalov had to come face to face on Sunday at the Flyers Wives Carnival with the very fans that booed him on Saturday. For Bryz, this ten day break from the clearly frustrated Flyers fans will be good for his psyche. Hopefully, this road trip with be successful and help Bryzgalov find his confidence again.
And lastly, the Flyers as a whole play better on the road. The Flyers are a mediocre 14-10-5 at the Wells Fargo Center this year. But the Flyers appear to be a different team on the road as they post an 18-9-2 record away from home. Maybe the road can help turn the Flyers around as they are 3-5-2 in their last 10. The Flyers take on a Jets team that is vying for the last playoff spot in the East. The Flyers have not beaten the Jets in three chances this season and Tuesday would be the perfect time to get victory number one. The Oilers are struggling in second to last place in the Western Conference. They are losers of three straight. The Flames find themselves in the eighth seed in the West so they are really looking for points in any way possible. The road trip is capped off with the Pacific Division leading San Jose Sharks who will be a good test for the Flyers.
This road trip will help define the last half of the season for the Flyers. By the time they return, the trade deadline will have come and gone. Their remaining opponents, with the exception of Detroit on March 6th, will all be Eastern Conference teams with many of them vying for playoff spots. It is time to see what the current Flyers are made of.
