Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News that the Phillies are "built to win" and he "likes the lineup." The Phillies only major addition to a team that won 73 games last season was 36-year-old outfielder Marlon Byrd.
The Phillies have five starting pitchers on their 40-man roster. Five. A starting pitcher must be added to the 40-man roster at some point this offseason. There is no way any general manager - competent or incompetent - could overlook that.
With that being said, I didn't think any general manager - competent or incompetent - would think that this Phillies roster is "built to win." I honestly cannot see how this team wins 85 games let alone win enough games to get into the playoffs and compete for a championship.
Does Amaro actually buy the stuff he is selling to the fans? If he does, the Phillies are in worse shape than originally thought.
