Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports former reliever Ryan Madson plans to throw off a mound in the first week of February for some teams. He states the Phillies, Red Sox, and Royals have all expressed interest in Madson.
On Christmas Eve, it was reported the Phillies have interest in a possible reunion with Madson and Madson is also interested in a possible return to Philadelphia. Madson has not thrown a pitch in a regular season game since he left Philadelphia following the 2011 season.
The deal would obviously be heavily incentive-laden due to Madson's arm trouble over the last two seasons but it could be a low-risk, high-reward move for the Phillies. Madson had tremendous success in Philadelphia and really stepped up into the closer's role in 2011 posting a 4-2 record with a 2.37 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP, and 32 saves.
