CSN Philly reports that new manager Ryne Sandberg does not see the point in rushing first baseman Ryan Howard back for some September at-bats this year either. Sandberg says that he would rather see Howard come back strong in time for Spring Training next year.
Everybody heals differently and this is a perfect example. Erik Kratz was back in less than six weeks from his torn meniscus but Howard, who had successful surgery on July 10th, is still up in the air on if he will return.
In 80 games this season, Howard was hitting .266/.319/.465 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI. He wasn't healthy last year playing in only 71 games after rupturing his Achilles tendon in October 2011. We thought he was healthy for part of this year but then he revealed that he was playing in pain for much of the season.
