The Phillies have the seventh overall pick in Wednesdays MLB Draft, their highest first round pick since they selected Gavin Floyd fourth overall in 2001. Philadelphia has struggled in recent years when it came to the draft, specifically their first picks. Since Cole Hamels was selected in the first round in 2002, the Phillies have failed to draft an impact played with their first picks opting for the likes of Greg Golson, Joe Savery and Anthony Hewitt.
Phillies assistant general manager and scouting director Marti Wolever addressed the Phillies draft strategy and options.
I like Diekman and De Fratus. I think they have potential with Diekman possessing the ability to be a real left-handed threat out of the bullpen. With that being said, they have been wildly inconsistent and certainly not something in which to cite when people are indicting you for the way you've drafted.
