Certain teams you just can’t get right and if you are a competitive person you’ll soon find yourself betting against that team in an attempt to will them to lose. Know when a game isn’t for you and be smart enough to let it go. Especially with College, there are another 50 games to look at on Saturday. Don’t bet prime time football just to make a game more interesting, be an adult and get Netflix if you are that bored on a weeknight.
Last week we touched on gambling partnerships. At halftime of the Temple game Uncle Radar called to tell me I need to let go of picking the local games just because they are local teams. PSU got backdoored a bit, but Temple was as much of a spite bet as there could be. Bottom line, if I don’t live in Philly those 2 games get replaced with Texas Tech & Ole Miss games over and we go 3-0 in college.
A wise man, Uncle Ray (rest his soul) once said…”your never out of a game when you bet the over” Maryland/BGSU was that game. 13-6 @ Halftime of a 71 point game and I actually didn’t hate the bet. Both teams were moving the ball just not finishing. A 21 point third quarter opened the whole game up and we needed 1 score with 8 minutes to go. Perfect example of tempo and chunk yardage to get a W.
Memphis/BGSU OVER 79.5 if you read any of the previous blogs you had to know this was coming. BGSU showed their offense can put up points fast in last week’s 2nd half. Memphis has put up 55 & 63 in their 2 games. Both offenses can score that much is clear. Defensively Memphis gave up points to Kansas. Enough said. ESPN 3 is covering this matchup. If you don’t have that channel then this might not be the game for you. A lot needs to go right for 2 teams to score 11 TD’s & 1 FG, that’s true. But only a little needs to go wrong on the defensive side of the ball for either of these teams to give up 7 points in 1:15. A TD every 5 minutes isn’t too much to ask for!
Louisiana Tech Team Total OVER 20. LA Tech is stepping up in class here for sure but Bill Snyder’s group is not the team of 2013/2014. Like most Power 5 teams they played 2 patsies and won in a fashion uglier than Bruce Jenner. UTSA is a team that TCU would throttle, and KState took until the 4th quarter to put them away. The other win was against an FCS team. KState takes the air out of the ball and will just run run run. Normally I’d worry about possessions here for LA Tech but they can’t stop the run either. 3 TD’s is not much to ask for from a team that I could see staying within the 10 point spread as well
Western Kentucky +1.5 @ Indiana – The Hilltoppers to me are like Keystone Light. Sure there are a ton of other options out there when it comes to craft beers and even better well known brands. But why change a good thing? You know what you are going to get from a 30 pack of Keystone…a good time and a killer hang over. That’s why I’m sticking with WKU. They have a chance to go 2-0 against Power 5 teams while scoring 49 points….that puts a team on the map. How’d did we hear about Boise State in the last 10+ years? They scored points and beat average big conference opponents. If Michigan beats Indiana nobody blinks but when Western Kentucky does it, Lee Corso gets to pretend he has been on them for years and they are the up and coming team! I like the Hilltoppers to show Indiana a little taste of CUSA football.
Pittsburgh -3 (First Half) vs San Francisco – West Coast Team playing on the East Coast at 1 pm is a spot I like to look for. Match that up with a win in the late Monday night game and the public should over value the Niners this week. Pittsburgh’s offense should be able to move the ball effectively. San Fran is feeling good coming of a Monday night win but a short week and travel can take its toll on a team, even this early in the season. I compare this game to finishing your last Final freshman year of college and staying up all night drinking. You parents came to pick you up at 9 AM and you were still drunk, having gone to bed about 2 hours before. Everyone doubted the 49ers on Monday night and then watched Carlos Hyde run all over Minnesota. Welcome to the hangover. First half Pittsburgh will come out fired up, and it might take 2 quarters for Kapernick to sober up. I like the Steelers in the game too, but first half is the play.
Eagles -5 vs Dallas – this is not a homer pick. The Eagles 2nd half last week, aside from a few miscues and a kicker that should be embarrassed, looked like the team we expected. Home opener against the most hated team, coming off a bad loss makes this game a must win. Sam Bradford had a very nice 2nd half and showed why Chip was high on him. Plenty of motivation to have DeMarco run wild which will open up the deep ball. If the Birds come out ready to play it will be a long day for Jerrah’s team. Eagles win 38-20. Side note. Resist the urge to tease this game down! Have confidence in the pick or don’t play it at all.
Arkansas -12.5 vs Texas Tech - As Tommy Como said in Raging Bull after Jake LaMotta destroyed the handsome boxer, and Youngstown's own Tony Janiro, "He ain't pretty no more". That's what Arkansas coach Bret Bielema will be saying to reporters about Pretty Boy coach Kliff Kingsberry, after the Red Raiders visit Fayetteville this Saturday. Pretty Boy will be wondering what hit him as Bielema, a former Big 10 bully, will not take his foot off the gas, and try to bloody Kingsberry and his Texas Tech squad as much as possible. The Razorbacks got caught napping last week losing to Toledo and Big Bully Bret will have his Hogs ready, willing, and able. Uncle Radar is going out of his comfort zone and picking a side as opposed to a total. I'm going with the side because I don't think Tech can keep up their end of the scoring in order to get over the 70 point total. I'm taking Arkansas -12.5, get it early as it will only go up by Saturday's 7:00 kick off.
