This week’s topic is every gamblers worst nightmare, The Shave. Some of you may like the landing strip (or racing stripe if your below the Mason Dixon line) perhaps you are a fan of the triangle…but the shave I am talking about is far less exciting. For example Texas Tech’s Team Total last week was 36. They scored 28 with just under 13 minutes left in the 3rd quarter of what will be the highest scoring game of the year. Tech had 35 with 8:30 to go! Sometimes you have the right side of a bet, but lose anyway, and this was it. When you tally up 530 passing yards, 36 points isn’t unrealistic, it should be a lock. Pretty Boy’s team couldn’t get out of their own way and committed 17 penalties for 142 yards and turned the ball over 4 times. That my friends is a Shave.
On the NFL side we had the Jets miss a FG, and Miami with 8 chances from inside the 5 yard line and they walked away with 0 points. A push there felt like a loss. Sometimes you can see a shave coming for an entire quarter, others it’s a backdoor cover by the opposing team. While you can avoid flat spots for a team (Clemson this week), poor matchups (Georgia favored over Bama), and weather affected games (everything along the coast) you just can’t predict a shave job.
Oklahoma – 16 @ Texas – laying 16 on the road in a rivalry game is not the best way to start your Saturday. But Texas has been eating more shit this season than the human centipede. Teammates acting like high school girls on twitter, a coach that has no support from the fan base now, and a lack of cohesion spell disaster for the Horns. I watched the majority of last weeks Texas TCU game and it was cringe worthy football. Their kicking game is a huge detriment, the secondary often looks confused, and they are inept on offense. Oklahoma needs this game to keep rising up the ranks of the top 25, and rivalry or not, a 10 point win doesn't help. They need to blow out this bad team.
BGSU 1H -7 vs UMass – things got dicey for the Falcons as I mentioned above, but playing at home changes the mindset. UMass tries to throw the ball and that plays right into the Bowling Green game plan. If UMass doesn’t get first downs and points, this one could become a run away by the half. I am also going to look at the team total here (45) but officially the play is first half. Playing in front of the home crowd and putting on a show for their fans is the right type of situation for my MAC team. Ugly women and beating up on lower level teams, thats what Bowling Green is known for. Football is back in small town Ohio and I like the Falcons to take a nice 3 score lead into the locker room.
Minnesota/Purdue UNDER 46 – I can’t believe I am writing the word Under. This is the type of Big 10 game that the clock seems to melt away. 3 yard carries followed by punts from between the 40’s and both teams starting deep in their own territory. Purdue’s defense isn’t strong, but they aren’t going against a powerhouse either. Boring, Big 10 football can still be profitable. Do yourself a HUGE favor. Don’t watch this game, don’t check the score, pretend it doesn’t exist and check your account Saturday night. Side note - this game may have some suspensions and injuries that keep starters out.
Packers Team Total OVER 27.5 - Love the Pack at home and love them to score points. If you listen to some bitter Eagles fans, Nick Foles won the Super Bowl last week in Arizona. Had nothing to do with Todd Gurley. Coming into the not so Frozen Tundra Nicky won't be able to rely on the run to keep them in this game. Rodgers loves to put up points at home and make a statement. Plus they get every call you can imagine when in Green Bay. Nick throws 2 picks, Packers put up 38 and everyone goes back to dreading Monday Morning with an extra few bucks in their pocket.
O Ye of Little Faith!
Uncle Radar's blind faith in the inordinate atheist Josh Rosen was the downfall of last weeks pick. However a lesson can be learned, one I should have seen coming like a plague. Having christened Rosen the "second coming" he proved himself to be anything but heavenly. It would have taken divine intervention for UCLA to cover the team total of 37 and I was mad as hell. I shouldn't have let my fondness for the young prodigy cloud my judgement. We are all guilty of this sin, getting stuck on a team and at some point losing a bet we should have passed on. I broke one of the commandments of gambling. It's lazy and is a sin in gambling circles. However .....let he who has no sin cast the first stone.
Enough is enough is enough is enough is enough is enough. Nobody said this shit was going to be easy. The Birds are not as bad as they've played, the Saints pretty much are. Brees is banged up and old. It's going to be an ambush, much like the Monday Nighter v Carolina last year. I'm not gonna waste your time or mine breaking this game down (does it matter anyway), it's a "feel bet". Eagles 38-17
It Used to be a Canes Thing
"IF you don't care who wins when the Canes play the Noles you are not from around here". Those were the words I heard 25 years ago when I got to South Florida. I was in town a few days when I went to the Orange Bowl (think Palestra with palm trees) for the first time, it was Penn St. vs. The U. it was everything I wanted it to be and then some. Having never been to a "Big Time'' college football game the atmosphere was surreal, like the OLD Mummers Parade (when it was good) with a football game in the middle of it all. As I remember it was Torretta to Copeland for a fourth quarter 80 yard TD (speed kills). Tony Sacco ,OJ McDuffy,or Richie Anderson couldn't bring the Lions a late win. I was a Canes season ticket holder for a while and will never forget the Labor Day weekend Canes v Noles or Canes v Gators classics. Passion and decadence are two words that come to mind. As a Temple Alum I was excited and proud when Al Golden was named head coach. He stayed the course when the NCAA was putting Cane nation under siege and should forever be thanked for that. What he should not be thanked for is turning the Canes into a "normal" team, they're Illinois with humidity. Canes will hang around for a half on talent alone and then get housed in the second half. If Golden attempts a FG he should be fired Sunday, and I love the guy.
