With Eagles head coach Andy Reid’s job on the line and the recent poor play of the team, many have wondered about potential candidates to replace Reid. The news of Payton’s impending free agency had Eagles fans taking to social media with their request to bring him in to replace Reid as Eagles head coach. King wrote today,
“That leaves New Orleans, Dallas and Philadelphia. If Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie fires Andy Reid at the end of the season, Payton, who coached quarterbacks in Philly in 1997 and '98, would be intriguing to him, and I believe Lurie would try hard to get him. It's a Lurie kind of move, trying to head off Dallas at the pass and take the kind of jump with a playoff-ready team that would give them a chance to break out of their recent malaise.”
It sure would be interesting to see Payton coaching the Eagles. He has coached here before and would bring instant credibility to a team that features one player (DT Cullen Jenkins in 2010 with Green Bay) who has won a Super Bowl (Payton won his in 2009). This is a storyline that will not be going away anytime soon.
