All that being said, Hawes is the culprit (I should say, "one of the culprits") in something the league frowns upon. Hawes participated in a University of Washington alumni game on June 23rd at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle. League rules prohibit players' participation in exhibition games prior to July 1st and after September 15th without permission from the league office.
So what happened? Hawes, along with fellow Huskies Quincy Pondexter, Tony Wroten, and Isaiah Thomas, was fined $15,000 by the NBA for their participation according to Y! Sports.
This seems a little ridiculous. I understand that they technically broke the rules but I don't see the harm in participating in an exhibition game at your alma mater. Just seems like the NBA is trying to send a message; whatever that message might be is up for debate.
