First-Round Pick Joel Embiid
Weight: 250 lbs.
Birthday: March 16, 1994 (20 years old)
The Sixers are getting one of the most talented players in the draft when he is healthy. Joel Embiid combines skill and athleticism on offense and defense. The seven-footer has a good mid-range game and he can step back and hit the three. When Embiid is stroking the three, he is nearly impossible to guard. He can move well laterally and shows great coordination for a big player.
On the defensive end, Embiid is one of the best in the game. He is a phenomenal shock-blocker and an incredible rebounder. Embiid consistently shows aggressiveness and is one of the hardest workers on the court at all times making it difficult to beat him.
If Embiid can improve anywhere, it is his strength. He stands at 250 lbs. but could stand to pack on a few pounds to withstand the beating he would take inside in the NBA. He needs more game experience as he only started playing organized basketball at the age of 16.
Fit with the Sixers:
Philadelphia plans to take the same patient approach to Embiid's recovery that they took with Nerlens Noel. Hinkie said in his press conference on Friday the timetable for Embiid is five-to-eight months but added "guess what approach we'll take" which sounds a lot like the Sixers will not showcase Embiid this season, although that could change.
If Embiid comes back fully healthy, the Sixers will have two solid big men at power forward (Noel) and center (Embiid). Both of those players are exceptional rim protectors and Hinkie went as far as to say the two of them will combine to be a "menace at the rim."
There's a lot to love about Embiid in Philadelphia.
