Second-Round Pick K.J. McDaniels
Weight: 195 lbs.
Birthday: February 8, 1993 (21 years old)
The Sixers got themselves a steal when K.J. McDaniels was still available when the 76ers selected 32nd overall. McDaniels was a first-team All-ACC selection for good reason. He is an incredible athlete who is as explosive of a leaper as they come. Despite standing just 6'6", McDaniels is an outstanding shot blocker. General manager Sam Hinkie mentioned McDaniels ability to lockdown on defense and his shot-blocking ability made him a first round talent.
McDaniels averaged 17.1 points per game his junior season at Clemson with much of his productivity coming from his ability to get to the basket and finish at the rim. He has been working on his jump shot which needs improvement. The 21-year-old shot 45.9% from the field this past season but only 30.4% from beyond the arc. Consistency is the key for McDaniels jump shot and it will likely determine whether he can play the two-guard position or whether he is more suited for the three.
Fit with the Sixers:
For the 2014-15 season, unless the Sixers have a major change in heart for how they want to handle Joel Embiid, McDaniels will be the highest 2014 draft selection to see the floor as Embiid is injured and Dario Saric is staying overseas. Philadelphia has a hole on the wing and McDaniels, with his ability to defend and finish at the rim, appears to be the guy who can fill the hole despite not being a lights-out shooter.
