Welcome to rivalry week. We're not talking Eagles–Cowgirls, Phillies-Mets, or even Dems-GOP. Nah, the real deal has always been Prep-La Salle.
Friday Night, under the lights, two serious titans will square off. To the outside world, this appears on the schedule as a regular season Catholic League Football game. However, to those peeps with Hawk or Explorer blood pumping through their extremely privileged veins, this is a war.
If you could only win one game, this would be it.
You think I’m being a little melodramatic? You think I'm injecting that “media hype?” No, this is REAL! For the past 12 years reporter extraordinaire, Walt Hunter, has entered the CBS3 newsroom with the greeting, “Hello Prepster.” Of course he is an Explorer, like many of my coworkers. For the record, I am not speaking to any them this week. Explorers are hard to hide from though. They're popping up everywhere. I'm ducking insults and virtual body blows daily. Twitter has become an old-fashioned schoolyard. Just ask Keith Conlin, La Salle Class of ‘91. Humongous fella and a guy who knows how to sling some verbal trash. With a nickname like, “Goon”, I'm letting it slide.
From the first day you enter The Prep as a freshman, you have an inherited dislike for La Salle. Whether it’s football, wrestling, rowing, soccer, golf, dating Mount girls, whatever. You want to beat them at EVERYTHING! You work your tail off with one goal in mind: annihilating La Salle.
Of course, all Prep and La Salle grads know what really feeds this unmatched rivalry. Peel back the athletic achievements and the SAT scores and you'll find two completely opposite entities that in reality, are more similar than we'd like to admit. Fess up. That early hatred you had in your soul somehow grew to (gulp) respect and even admiration. Before you know it, you developed a common bond with those punks from that suburban country club. Strange! After graduation, it almost became The Prep AND La Salle against everyone else.
But this is rivalry week. Put all that “common bond” stuff aside. When that whistle blows I’ll be on my feet, screaming for the Prep as if it were 1993 again. The game is ours for the winning.
The day is dark for the foe, So fight team fight and we'll Bring Home Tonight, A Victory for Old St. Joe's.
