One player who has could be a viable trade option but hasn't had his name thrown around much is catcher Carlos Ruiz. Ruiz, 34, is entering the last few months of his contract with the Phillies and is slated to become a free agent at the end of the season.
ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that other teams say the Phillies have "very little inclination to trade" Ruiz. Ruiz, despite his struggles at the plate, holds a lot of value for a contender because of his strong defense and ability to command a pitching staff.
Chooch served a 25 game suspension earlier this season after a second positive test for Adderall. In 46 games this season, he is batting just .253/.301/.280 with no home runs, nine RBIs and only four extra base hits - he hit 48 extra base hits last year.
I hate to say it but, if the Phillies can find a buyer, Chooch should probably pack his bags. At 34 years old, he is not the long-term solution for the Phillies. Erik Kratz can hold down the starting catching duties for the rest of the season in the event of a trade.
