The Phillies dropped their sixth straight game last night 6-1 to the Nationals. It is the first time they have been swept all year. They are the first team since 1904 to have a six game losing streak despite winning 98 games. More here.
Last night the Rays cut a half-game off of the Red Sox' lead in the Wild Card. They played the Yankees, and having already clinched the AL East, rested their usual starters. The Rays won 15-8 in what seems to me as if the Yankees are rolling over so that the Red Sox do not make the playoffs. More here.
In case you haven't heard, last night the Flyers played the Detroit Red Wings. The game was actually pretty good, going into overtime on a late goal scored by newly acquired Wayne Simmonds. The Flyers lost in overtime, but the bigger story here was that someone threw a banana onto the ice when Simmonds was attempting a shoot-out goal. More here as well as Whiz Wit article to follow later today.
The St. Louis Cardinals lost a huge opportunity last night losing to the Mets. The Cardinals were up 6-1 going into the 8th inning and the Mets staged a huge comeback in the 8th and 9th innings to win 8-6. The Cardinals now sit 2 games back of the Braves with that loss. The Braves, who were idle last night, have to thank the Mets for still trying and playing spoiler for them. More here.
In recent NCAA conference realignment news, Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe resigned. With his conference having one of the biggest shake ups in the past year, losing Colorado, Nebraska, and now potentially Texas A&M, I would want out too. The resignation and decision to leave was mutual according to Beebe. The Big 12 already lost it's championship game, and is looking to lose much more in the coming years. More here.
