The Flyers kept their playoff hopes alive last night with a big win over the Washington Captials after falling behind 1-0 and then again 4-2, the Flyers stormed back behind an emotional goal from Claude Giroux and a goal with just over nine seconds left from Kimmo Timonen the Flyers forced overtime. Ruslan Fedotenko scored the game winner off a gorgeous cross-ice pass from Timonen to get the Flyers a big two points and leaves them two points behind the Rangers for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. The Duke Blue Devils and Louisville Cardinals faced off with a chance to go to the Final Four. There was a scary moment with 6:33 remaining in the first half when sophomore guard Kevin Ware went up to contest a three-point shot and came down and broke his leg. He had a compound fracture of his right leg and underwent successful surgery. It was only 35-32 Louisville at the break but the emotional Cardinals came out and dominated the second half outscoring Duke 50-31. Louisville will face Wichita State in the Final Four. More here.
Major League Baseball technically kicked off the regular season last night in Houston. The new look Astros, who have a payroll of $25 million this season, took on the Texas Rangers who are just a year removed from two consecutive American League pennants. Houston opened their first game in the American League West with a big win. Justin Maxwell hit two triples and had a great catch in the ninth inning for the Astros. Bud Norris pitched well while Erik Bedard threw 3.1 innings for his first career save as the Astros went on to win 8-2. More here.
