The Phillies were looking to take the first two games of their series against the Pittsburgh Pirates as they sent Cole Hamels to the mound. Hamels pitched eight strong innings allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out six. Pirates starter Jeff Locke went six innings allowing no runs on two hits. Behind a fourth inning Brandon Inge double and Gaby Sanchez's opposite field solo homerun in the eighth inning was enough to propel the Pirates to a 2-0 victory as the Phillies bats could not get anything started. The Flyers honored the Boston Bruins before last night's matchup against the Bruins at the Wells Fargo Center. With the scored tied at 1 in the second period, the Flyers scored seven seconds apart in the second period on two fluky goals. After opening the lead to 4-1, the Bruins would score to cut the lead to 4-2 with 11:40 remaining in the third period with the momentum looking like it could switch. The Flyers responded 13 seconds later when Claude Giroux found Simon Gagne on a beautiful pass on a 2-on-1 to put the Flyers up 5-2. They would go on to win by a 5-2 score. More here.
The NCAA football playoff will be here sooner than we know it and now we know what it will be called: "College Football Playoff." Aside from the obvious creative masterpiece of a name they came up with, this is great for college football and will be put into place at the end of the 2014 season. Cowboys Stadium will host the first The Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, and Sugar Bowl will be joined by the Cotton Bowl and Chick-Fil-A Bowl in the three year bowl rotation for the semifinals.
