The Phillies were in New York yesterday looking for their first sweep of the season against the Mets. Cole Hamels went six innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out eight but walking six batters. Hamels left the game tied 1-1 but in the top of the seventh pinch hitter Ryan Howard drove in two runs with his double off the centerfield wall. The Phillies would go on to win 5-1 and get Hamels his first win of the season. More here.
The Lakers were looking to avoid getting swept out of the playoffs in the first round. They were going to have to do it without their best player, Kobe Bryant, who tore his Achilles tendon two weeks ago. They would then have to do without their second best player as Dwight Howard received his second technical foul of the game early in the third quarter. At the time of Howard's ejection, the Spurs led by 21 points due in large part behind a 26-14 second quarter. Tony Parker had 23 points en route to the Spurs series sweep of the Lakers, 103-82. As of Sunday, the New York Jets had six quarterbacks on their roster including Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, and second-round draft pick Geno Smith. This morning the Jets have released former first round pick, Tim Tebow. The Jets released a statement that read, "We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow. Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped." More here.
