The Phillies opened their season last night in Atlanta as Cole Hamels took the mound for the Phillies. He allowed three homeruns to the Braves as Freddie Freeman, Dan Uggla, and Justin Upton all took him deep. Chase Utley drove in three runs, including his first homerun of the year in the fourth inning. Utley was a double short of the cycle. The Phillies went on to lose 7-5. The St. Louis Blues bolstered their already strong blue line last night and, in the process, took away a defenseman on the Flyers wish list. The Blues acquired defenseman Jay Bouwmeester from the Calgary Flames for two prospects and a first round draft pick. Bouwmeester was rumored to be on the Flyers radar as recently as yesterday afternoon. More here.
The Washington Nationals opened their season yesterday against the Miami Marlins. The Nationals, picked to finish with the best record in the National League, were dealing with a team that is expected to finish with the worst record in the National League. Reigning rookie of the year Bryce Harper went deep in his first two at-bats of the year and led the Nationals to a 2-0 lead. More here.
